The word acolyte means "companion," or one who helps. Acolytes serve as helpers to the priest and perform a number of important functions before, during and at the close of the worship service.
Acolytes must be fifth grade students or higher and they serve at all worship services, including special services such as weddings, Christmas and Easter.
